Joe diGenova, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump appointed to lead a Justice Department investigation into whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against Trump, has resigned from the role. His departure follows mounting frustration from both the Justice Department and the White House over the pace and management of the probe, which has produced no charges in the five months since diGenova took charge. The investigation, which targeted officials involved in scrutinising Trump over Russian interference in the 2016 election and the FBI's 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, has been widely seen as an attempt to pursue Trump's grievances against the so-called "deep state," though multiple prior government inquiries found no evidence of criminal conduct by senior officials.
