At least 30 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a massive waste dump collapsed onto homes and makeshift shelters in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, following heavy overnight rainfall. The disaster struck at around 2am local time in the Gbessia commune, when floodwaters destabilised the enormous mound of rubbish, sending it cascading onto nearby tents and shacks. Six people were seriously injured and 16 more suffered lighter injuries, according to a government statement, though authorities have warned that the death toll could rise further.

Among the survivors was a woman named Cire Diallo, who told reporters she had lost all five of her children in the collapse.
