A wave of online hate speech, disinformation, and a widely circulated petition calling for their expulsion has intensified pressure on Rohingya refugees living in Malaysia, where the Muslim minority had long found relative safety after fleeing persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The hostility has had tangible consequences: more than 100 Rohingya were forced from a village in Kuala Muda, in the state of Penang, in late July, and schools serving refugee children were temporarily closed. Malaysia's government announced plans to return 5,000 Rohingya to Myanmar before walking back the proposal under pressure from human rights groups, who warned the refugees could face serious danger if repatriated.
