Tropical Depression Ester left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR — the zone within which Philippine weather authorities monitor and name storms) on Saturday morning, June 6, less than 24 hours after entering it, with the system now tracking toward Taiwan some 550 kilometres north-northeast of Batanes, the country's northernmost province. The storm, which did not make landfall, brought moderate to heavy rain and Signal No. 1 winds only to Batanes before departing. Although Ester itself has moved on, it has intensified the southwest monsoon (habagat), prompting PAGASA (the Philippine weather bureau) to warn of flooding and landslide risks across much of Luzon, with the Ilocos region and Zambales facing the heaviest rainfall over the coming 48 hours.
