A ninth-grade student shot and killed a fellow pupil inside a classroom at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in the southern Philippines on Tuesday morning before taking his own life, in an attack that was livestreamed on Facebook. The incident, which occurred at around 7:45 a.m. at the Jesuit-run institution's high school campus in Zamboanga — a port city in western Mindanao, the Philippines' second-largest island — has prompted a citywide suspension of classes and a formal Day of Mourning.

According to police, the shooter, a minor, entered a fourth-floor classroom and opened fire on a Grade 10 student, also a minor, before moving to another floor, shouting toward the lower levels of the building, and fatally shooting himself. Both students were found dead on different floors. The interior secretary, Victor Remulla, confirmed that the attacker had broadcast the assault live on social media; his Facebook account has since been disabled. In the circulated footage, a gun barrel is seen moving down a hallway before being pointed into a classroom, sending students in uniforms screaming toward the exits. Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said the shooter had entered the campus carrying a high-powered firearm and a .45-calibre pistol, and that the attacker had initially fired at a teacher, who was unharmed.

Investigators said the attack appeared to have been premeditated. Hours after the shooting, the Philippine Bureau of Customs announced the preventive suspension of an agent whose government-issued firearm was allegedly used in the attack — a customs security official at the port of Zamboanga who, authorities confirmed, was the shooter's father. The official was relieved of his duties, and police are working to determine how the weapons were brought onto the school campus.
