South Korea has appointed Choi Kee-young, an aerospace engineering professor at Inha University (a major research university in Incheon), as the new chairperson of the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board. Choi, who holds a doctoral degree from Stanford University, will lead the 11-member board for a three-year term alongside three newly appointed non-standing members. Following his appointment, Choi pledged to accelerate the investigation into the deadly 2024 Jeju Air plane crash and to strengthen the independence and credibility of the country's aviation and railway accident investigation system.
