Kenyan President William Ruto used the Partners for Multilateralism Summit (P4M), held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, to call for a fundamental shift in how international financial institutions engage with Africa. Ruto argued that global bodies should act as "catalysts" to unlock capital already present on the continent, rather than functioning primarily as lenders, adding that institutions failing to reflect the people they serve will lose their trust. The summit, co-hosted by Kenya alongside Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, the European Union and India, was launched as an open platform to defend multilateral principles, strengthen international law, and coordinate responses to shared challenges including climate change and artificial intelligence.
