Pakistan's national space agency, Suparco (the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), has identified 130 potentially dangerous glacial lakes in the country's northern mountain regions that pose a risk of sudden, destructive outburst floods to downstream communities. Based on satellite imagery taken at the end of May 2026, only 24 of the lakes are currently unfrozen and under close observation, with authorities stressing the findings are a call for preparedness rather than alarm. Suparco has also warned that an emerging El Niño climate pattern could bring weaker monsoon rains, more frequent heat waves, and warmer winters to Pakistan later in the year.
