News Corp has filed a countersuit against Brave Software (a San Francisco-based company that operates an independent web browser and search engine), accusing it of "flagrant theft" for scraping and reselling copyrighted articles from the Wall Street Journal and New York Post to AI companies without authorisation. The media giant, controlled by the Murdoch family, filed the suit in Oakland, California, on 22 July, seeking an injunction, unspecified damages, and up to $150,000 per infringement; it argues that the more content Brave copies and sells, the less incentive AI firms have to negotiate licensing deals with publishers. The countersuit comes after Brave preemptively sued News Corp in March 2025, claiming its practice of indexing articles and providing users with snippets constituted legal fair use — part of a broader wave of litigation between publishers and technology companies over the use of copyrighted content to train and power AI systems.
