A Pakistani couple living in Reggio Emilia, northern Italy, have been sentenced to just over two years in prison after being convicted of abusing their 22-year-old daughter, forcing her to undergo an abortion, and coercing her into marrying a cousin in Pakistan. The woman told police her parents had locked her in a basement at night, confiscated her phone, beaten her repeatedly, and ultimately compelled her to travel to Pakistan to accept the arranged marriage; when she became pregnant by a boyfriend her family disapproved of, she was punched until she miscarried. The case has drawn comparisons to that of Saman Abbas, a young Pakistani-Italian woman killed by her own family in 2021 for rejecting a forced marriage, and highlights ongoing concerns about honour-based violence within migrant communities in Italy.
