A body discovered in Romania has been identified as likely belonging to George Smyth, an 18-year-old British geology student who went missing during a solo hiking trip in November. Smyth, from Newport in Shropshire, was last known to be in the Bucegi Mountains (part of the Carpathian range in central Romania) when he made an emergency call reporting disorientation, exhaustion, and signs of hypothermia in severe weather conditions. Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the discovery on Saturday, and his family — who expressed gratitude to the Salvamont mountain rescue service for months of searching in dangerous terrain — said they could now focus on "bringing George home and saying goodbye."
