Spanish midfielder Rodri has completed a transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona, arriving in the Catalan capital on Monday to finalise a deal worth €76.5 million (approximately $88.5 million). The 30-year-old, widely regarded as one of the finest defensive midfielders in world football, described the move as a lifelong ambition. "Very happy to arrive. There have been some very intense days, but I'm happy that everything has been resolved," he told reporters at his arrival. "For me it's a dream to play for Barcelona. I'm excited about being with my teammates — many of them I already know. Now it's time to get to work and give my best."
Rodri is expected to undergo a medical this week as both clubs exchange documentation to formalise the agreement. He will join several Spanish international teammates already at the club, including Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi and Pedri. His contract with Barcelona is reported to run until 2030. Real Madrid had also been linked with the midfielder, who had publicly praised the club in the past, though it is Barcelona who have secured his signature.
The transfer caps a remarkable period for the Madrid-born player. Rodri joined City from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and went on to score the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter Milan. He claimed the Ballon d'Or — awarded annually to the world's best player — in 2024 after helping Spain win the European Championship, and last month captained Spain to its second World Cup title, picking up the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. He missed City's 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, as he continues to recover from minor back surgery carried out after the World Cup.
At Barcelona, Rodri will link up with a squad being reshaped under German head coach Hansi Flick, who is targeting an unprecedented third consecutive La Liga title. The club has also signed England forward Anthony Gordon to compensate for the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres — the latter having scored the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina — and is set to add Portuguese defender João Cancelo in the coming days.
Rodri's departure leaves a significant gap in Manchester City's engine room. His exit follows that of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, who moved to Real Madrid earlier this summer, continuing a notable dismantling of the midfield that powered City's recent dominance of English and European football. For Barcelona, however, the signing represents a major statement of intent as they pursue Champions League glory alongside domestic supremacy.
