UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has approved German media group Axel Springer's £575m acquisition of The Daily Telegraph and its Sunday edition, saying she sees no grounds to refer the deal to media regulator Ofcom for further scrutiny. Axel Springer, which also owns Bild, Politico, and Business Insider, expects to complete the purchase by the end of June, pending regulatory sign-off in Ireland and Austria. The deal ends nearly three years of ownership uncertainty that began when the Barclay family lost control of the Telegraph titles in 2023 over unpaid debts, setting off a protracted and complicated sale process involving UAE-backed investors and a rival bid from Lord Rothermere's Daily Mail group.
