Arsenal suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 3-0 away to Brighton & Hove Albion, while north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur remain winless after a 3-2 home loss to Aston Villa left them mired near the foot of the table.
Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, had made an exceptional start to the campaign, winning all seven matches across competitions before travelling to Brighton's Amex Stadium on the south coast of England. Fabian Hurzeler's side — buoyed by an extraordinary midweek League Cup victory in which they came from 2-0 down to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford — pressed Arsenal relentlessly from the opening whistle. Pascal Gross opened the scoring after 31 minutes, his shot deflecting in off the post. Just before half-time, teenager Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead after goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen had denied Bukayo Saka at the other end. An hour in, Chema Andrés headed in from Gross's corner to complete a commanding 3-0 scoreline. It is the third consecutive season that the reigning Premier League champions have lost at the Amex — Liverpool and Manchester City suffered the same fate in the previous two years.
