Hundreds of thousands of people in southwestern Japan were ordered to evacuate on Friday, August 7, as slow-moving Typhoon Dolphin closed in on the region, prompting authorities to cancel more than 500 flights and suspend industrial operations across the area.
The Category 1 typhoon carried maximum sustained winds of 144 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 198 kph, as it tracked toward a chain of islands linking the Kyushu region — Japan's southernmost main island — and Okinawa prefecture, a subtropical island chain roughly 1,600 kilometres southwest of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued evacuation orders for nearly 260,000 residents across Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures, warning that winds could damage or collapse some structures. Automaker Toyota also suspended operations at nine factories as the storm approached.
Authorities expressed particular concern about the potential formation of a linear rain band — a concentrated, narrow corridor of intense precipitation and thunderstorms — which could trigger serious flooding in affected areas. The JMA warned that the typhoon's slow movement meant rain and wind impacts could be prolonged, compounding the danger for residents.
The storm has added urgency to an already strained situation in Kumamoto prefecture, which was struck by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake last week. Around 6,700 residents remain in evacuation centres after homes collapsed in that disaster, and those displaced now face the added threat of typhoon conditions. Forecasters have also flagged the risk of heatstroke, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit) even as the storm moves through.
The convergence of a major typhoon, earthquake aftermath, and extreme heat represents a serious compounded emergency for southwestern Japan's authorities and residents. Emergency planners and meteorologists are closely monitoring the storm's trajectory, urging those in affected areas to remain vigilant against landslides, storm surges, and high waves in addition to the primary wind and rain threats.
