Paula Blasi, a 23-year-old Spanish cyclist riding for UAE-ADQ, claimed a stunning victory at the women's Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, becoming the first Spanish rider to win the prestigious Dutch spring classic. Racing over 158.1 kilometres from Maastricht to Valkenburg in the southern Dutch province of Limburg — a region known for its rolling hills and challenging climbs — Blasi attacked from more than 20 kilometres out and held off the field to finish in 4 hours, 2 minutes and 14 seconds. Polish former champion Kasia Niewiadoma and Dutch favourite Demi Vollering crossed the line 27 seconds behind.
Blasi, born in Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona, launched her decisive move on the Cauberg climb alongside Dutch rider Nienke Vinke before accelerating clear in a solo effort around 22 kilometres from the finish. Her lead grew rapidly — reaching 45 seconds over the chasing group at one point — and she maintained her advantage through a navigational error at a roundabout with four kilometres to go and a late burst of rain, neither of which cost her the victory. On the final climb of the Cauberg, she crested with 37 seconds over Vollering and Niewiadoma, who could not close the gap despite a determined late effort.
The race had earlier seen an early breakaway involving Belgian rider Nijssen — a former middle-distance track athlete and Belgian champion — alongside Steigenga and American Franz, which was brought back by the peloton around 73 kilometres from the finish. Dutch riders Anna van der Breggen and Mischa Bredewold, the defending champion, were active in the finale, as was Vollering, but a decisive moment came when Blasi and Vinke slipped away while the main favourites were marking each other.
Blasi's victory is particularly remarkable given that she was a late addition to the start list.
