Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has urged families, employers, healthcare workers, and policymakers to create more supportive environments for breastfeeding mothers as World Breastfeeding Week (observed globally from 1–7 August each year) approaches. The ministry said this year's theme — "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works" — underscores the importance of scaling up proven strategies that improve infant nutrition, reduce healthcare costs, and advance food security. A national commemoration is planned for 3 August, alongside community outreach programmes and a media conference by the country's coordinating minister of health.
