The United Nations human rights office has expanded its blacklist of firms linked to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, adding 61 companies and bringing the total to 214 businesses across 11 countries, the majority of which are Israeli. The list, first published in 2020 under a UN Human Rights Council mandate, is designed to name and shame companies deemed to be contributing to human rights violations against Palestinians, though the body has no power to compel firms to change their conduct. The update comes amid growing international pressure on settlements, with Britain, France, and Canada recently announcing bans or restrictions on trade with West Bank settlements; Israel, for its part, rejected the blacklist, calling it an "ugly attempt" to target companies that have "committed no wrongdoing."
