The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered €7.2 million ($8.5 million) in reparations for more than 65,000 victims of Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud, a former jihadist leader convicted in 2024 of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including torture and religious persecution, during the occupation of Timbuktu (a historic city in northern Mali) between 2012 and 2013. The court awarded collective rehabilitation measures — including psychological support, educational programmes, and socio-economic assistance — as well as individualised programmes for those who suffered torture or mutilation, with particular attention to the harm inflicted on women and girls. Because Al Hassan was declared indigent, the funds will be disbursed through the ICC's Trust Fund for Victims, financed by the court's member states, rather than collected directly from the convicted man, who is due for early release in March 2026.
