A boy was killed and about 19 to 24 others, students and staff from a religious high school, were injured on Monday when an explosion struck a hiking trip near the Lebanese border in northern Israel, near kibbutz Yiftach (a communal farming settlement). Police suspect unexploded ordnance, and Israeli media, citing the military, report that a student picked up a device from a Hezbollah rocket and put it in his bag; several of the injured are in serious condition. The incident, which Defence Minister Israel Katz said is under investigation, highlights the danger of unexploded munitions in a border region that has seen heavy Israeli strikes on Lebanon and periodic Hezbollah rocket fire.
