Taylor Swift has surpassed Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history, receiving 31 total VMAs after accepting the newly created Artist Director Honor at Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles. The award, presented at the Peacock Theater and broadcast on CBS, recognises artists whose creative work behind the camera has advanced visual storytelling — Swift noted she has been involved in around 60 music videos over 20 years, directing or co-directing 18 of them. Swift also used the occasion to debut the music video for "Patient Zero," her first single since marrying NFL star Travis Kelce in July, which she directed and which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
