British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on Glasgow City Council to reverse its decision to deny the Royal Regiment of Scotland (Scotland's senior infantry regiment) the freedom of the city as the unit marks its 20th anniversary. The council voted down the honorary designation last week after SNP and Green councillors opposed a Labour motion, prompting Glasgow North East MP Maureen Burke to tell parliament that many residents felt "ashamed and embarrassed" by the snub. Starmer said he "cannot understand" the decision, noting that 23 regiment members had given their lives in service and that more than 20 other Scottish councils had already granted the regiment the same honour.
