A man in the northern Nigerian city of Kano (a major commercial hub in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north) has been sentenced to two weeks in prison and fined 100,000 naira (around $74) after neighbours complained that he was stockpiling bags of human faeces outside his home. Mohammed Saidu, who works emptying septic tanks, is believed to have been collecting the waste to sell to farmers as fertiliser — a common but rarely publicly discussed practice in the region. Magistrate Halima Wali, who visited the property before ruling, described his actions as highly inconsiderate and a threat to public health, ordering him to clear all waste from the premises and not repeat the offence.
