Cape Verde has declared two days of national mourning after a bus plunged into a deep ravine on Fogo island (one of the main islands in this Atlantic Ocean archipelago nation off West Africa), killing 25 people — the majority of them children and teenagers. The bus was returning to the town of São Filipe on Saturday evening after a day trip organised annually by the driver as a treat for pupils he transported during the school year, when it veered off the road; the driver was among those killed. President José Maria Neves attended funerals for some of the victims and has ordered an inquiry into the crash, while 12 survivors remained hospitalised, including two in serious condition.
