Skywatchers across the northern hemisphere are in for a treat this week as the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak Wednesday night into Thursday morning, offering one of the most anticipated astronomical displays of the year. Under ideal conditions, NASA estimates that between 50 and 100 meteors per hour may be visible, while the American Meteor Society puts the figure at 30 to 50 per hour for those watching from rural areas away from urban light pollution. This year's peak arrives with an unusually rich celestial backdrop: a total solar eclipse visible across Spain, Iceland and Greenland, and a six-planet parade — though the best time to watch the Perseids will come after the eclipse reaches totality.
The Perseids are produced by debris shed by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, an icy body that orbits the sun roughly every 133 years and is not expected to return until 2125. As astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explained, when comets approach the sun, solar heat evaporates their ice and releases the frozen dust and rock within, which continues to orbit the sun long after the comet has passed. When Earth crosses through these debris trails each August, the particles slam into the atmosphere at extreme speeds, burning up and producing the bright streaks known as shooting stars. Records of this particular shower stretch back more than 2,000 years, making it one of the most historically documented meteor events.
Several factors make this year's viewing especially favourable. The moon is in its new moon phase during the peak, meaning minimal moonlight will wash out the sky.
