The 45-year-old man suspected of killing six people last month at a shelter for pregnant women and young mothers in Stade, northern Germany, has been found dead in his prison cell in Bremervörde (Lower Saxony). A doctor determined he died by strangulation, and authorities say there are no indications that anyone else was involved, pointing to suicide. The shooting on 29 June was reportedly linked to a custody dispute over his three-month-old daughter, after the child had been removed from his care amid concerns she had suffered shaken baby syndrome.
