British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has firmly stated that the United Kingdom will not be drawn into the ongoing conflict involving Iran, dismissing Donald Trump's public attacks on Prime Minister Keir Starmer as "small and petty" pressure tactics. Speaking at a progressive leaders' conference in Barcelona, Lammy said Trump had attempted to push Starmer into changing his position on Iran, but insisted: "This is not our war, and we're not going to get engaged." Lammy had travelled to Washington last week to meet US Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical shipping lane through which much of the world's oil and goods pass — warning that the conflict was compounding economic instability already worsened by the war in Ukraine and the pandemic.
