The arrests come months after Senegal passed legislation increasing penalties for same-sex relations, with more than 100 people charged since the law took effect, though allegations of willful HIV transmission against some defendants have since been dropped. Activists warn that the LGBT+ community is being scapegoated by politicians seeking a unifying issue, a pattern also seen across several other West African nations that have recently enacted similar legislation.
