A broad coalition of UK unions, environmental groups, and thinktanks — including the TUC, Greenpeace, and the New Economics Foundation — has called on the government to significantly expand the National Wealth Fund (NWF), a public investment vehicle launched in 2024 to attract private capital into large infrastructure projects. The group argues the NWF's current budget of £5.5bn per year falls far short of comparable institutions abroad, noting that Germany's public investment bank KfW lent nearly ten times that amount in 2025 alone. The call comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey prepare the government's next budget, with the coalition pressing for the NWF to be granted independence to raise its own financing and take ownership stakes in key national projects.
