A search and recovery team has brought the bodies of British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and three of his expedition members to the base camp of Broad Peak (the world's 12th highest mountain, located in Pakistan's Karakoram range) following a deadly avalanche on 30 July. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that Purja, 43, along with Chinese climber Zhong Wang and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa and Kilu Sherpa, were recovered after a technically demanding operation, while three other team members remain missing. The disaster has stunned the global climbing community, with the president of Nepal's National Mountain Guide Association lamenting that the sport had "lost a generation of accomplished mountaineers."
