India has deported approximately 4,800 Bangladeshi citizens from West Bengal (a densely populated eastern border state of over 100 million people) since the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took power there last month, with a further 836 detainees awaiting removal. State Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the figures from Kolkata, saying holding centres established across all districts in May have formed the backbone of the operation, which targets undocumented migrants not covered by India's Citizenship Amendment Act. The crackdown carries broader significance amid strained India-Bangladesh relations following a 2024 political upheaval in Dhaka, and has drawn criticism from rights groups who accuse authorities of expelling Bengali-speaking Muslims without due process.
