A catastrophic cascade of ice, rock, mud and water swept through communities along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday morning, killing at least 160 people and leaving nearly 1,500 others missing. The disaster, one of the deadliest in the Himalayan region in years, struck without rain, catching authorities off guard and triggering a massive international rescue and relief operation.
The chain of events began high in the Himalayas at approximately 8:40am local time, when a large section of glacier broke away at an elevation of around 5,200 metres and plunged more than 1,200 metres into the valley below. The resulting ice-rock avalanche struck the Lhende River on the Tibetan side of the border, temporarily blocking it with debris. When that natural dam gave way, a torrent of water, mud and sediment surged downstream — described by one environmental historian as "like an inland tsunami" travelling nearly 170 kilometres down the Bhote Koshi river valley into central Nepal. Water levels in the Trishuli River, which flows south through Nepal towards India, reportedly rose by as much as nine metres in just 30 minutes. The disaster was initially misidentified as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but the US Geological Survey later determined that the seismic signal — eventually measured at magnitude 5.2 — was generated by the glacial collapse and debris flow itself, not a tectonic event.
The hardest-hit areas lie in Nepal's Rasuwa district, immediately south of the Chinese border, with flooding also reported in the Nuwakot and Dhading districts further downstream. At least 19 bridges and around 40 kilometres of roads were destroyed, severely hampering rescue efforts. Nepali police have recovered at least 157 bodies, while Chinese authorities reported three deaths in Tibet's Gyirong County, part of the Shigatse region. Among the nearly 1,500 missing are at least 800 foreign nationals — tourists and pilgrims who had been travelling through the area, many of them heading toward Kailash Mansarovar, a sacred site in Tibet revered by Hindus and Buddhists. Nepal alone lists 826 people missing, including close to 600 foreign tourists from more than two dozen countries, among them 177 Indians, 63 Americans, 34 Australians and 33 British nationals. On the Tibetan side, 558 people remain unaccounted for, including 260 foreign nationals. More than 5,000 Nepalese army and police personnel have been mobilised, with helicopters, drones and search dogs deployed despite continued difficulties from high river levels and deep sediment.
International support has poured in rapidly. India airlifted roughly 10 tonnes of emergency supplies to Nepal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged further assistance in a call with his Nepalese counterpart. The United States is sending a disaster response adviser and $500,000 in aid, while South Korea — several of whose nationals working at a hydropower project are missing — is preparing a rapid-response team. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies released 1 million Swiss francs in emergency funding, and the European Union activated its Copernicus satellite service to map the disaster zone. The United Nations has deployed personnel in Nepal and expressed readiness to assist on the Chinese side as well.
Scientists warn the disaster illustrates the growing dangers facing the Himalayan region — sometimes called the "third pole" for holding the world's largest reserves of ice and snow outside the Arctic and Antarctic. Climate change is accelerating glacier melt and destabilising the permafrost that binds steep mountain slopes together, making glacial collapses and cascading hazard chains more likely. Experts also cautioned that a debris blockage reportedly still lodged upstream could trigger a second flood surge. The disaster has renewed calls for investment in early warning systems for mountain communities — systems that monitor seismic activity, river levels and rainfall in real time, but which remain difficult to fund and maintain in lower-income countries such as Nepal.
