Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina have both advanced to the quarter-finals of the French Open in Paris, setting up a historic all-Ukrainian last-eight clash at Roland Garros. Kostyuk, 22, pulled off the biggest result of the tournament so far by eliminating three-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1, while Svitolina came from a set down to beat Swiss 11th seed Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 on Sunday.
Kostyuk's victory over the Polish third seed was emphatic. After Swiatek broke early to lead 4-3 in the first set, the Ukrainian hit back to claim the opener and then dominated the second, taking full advantage of a Swiatek serve that completely fell apart. It capped a remarkable clay-court season for Kostyuk, who had already won a 250-level title in Rouen, France, and claimed her first WTA 1000 crown at the Madrid Open. She is currently riding a 15-match winning streak on clay. Swiatek, who won Roland Garros in 2020 and claimed three further titles at the tournament, has struggled to recapture her dominant form on the Paris clay since losing last year's semi-final to Aryna Sabalenka. The defeat came on her 25th birthday.
Svitolina, 30, produced her own comeback victory, recovering from a slow start against Bencic to dominate the decisive third set. The win follows her first WTA 1000 title in eight years, claimed at the Italian Open in Rome earlier in May. The quarter-final will therefore pit against each other the two winners of the main warm-up events leading into Roland Garros.
