The joint operation, involving the UK, France, and Germany, targeted criminal networks that use western Germany as a staging post for small boat crossings of the English Channel, with seized equipment estimated capable of carrying over 2,000 people. The crackdown comes as Channel crossing numbers have fallen by roughly 43% in early 2025 compared to the same period last year, though analysts caution that the new legislation remains largely untested in court and that smuggling gangs have historically adapted rather than abandoned their operations when supply lines are disrupted.
