An 82-year-old man has died following a violent altercation over a sunlounger at Vouliagmeni beach, a popular bathing spot on the Athenian riviera roughly 20 kilometres south of Athens. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the elderly man, who was accompanied by his wife, arrived before 10am hoping to secure a sunbed. A dispute broke out with a 76-year-old man — described by authorities as unknown to the victim — after it became clear that loungers were in short supply. Witnesses told Greek newspapers that the argument quickly escalated into a physical brawl that drew in others from both parties, with the screaming audible from the far end of the beach.
During the fight, the 82-year-old collapsed. Bystanders administered CPR and used a defibrillator while waiting for emergency services to arrive. He was transported by ambulance to Asklepieion hospital in the nearby district of Voula, where he died at around 11am. A postmortem was immediately ordered to determine whether the cardiac arrest was directly caused by the altercation. Police arrested the 76-year-old man on suspicion of assault, along with a 21-year-old woman who had been accompanying him — witnesses reported she had a bloodied and swollen face. The woman was subsequently released. The beach resort's manager was also briefly detained for questioning. Authorities said all those involved would appear before a magistrate.
The incident has provoked shock in Greece, with one official source describing it as unprecedented and noting that disputes in the country tend to be expressed loudly rather than physically — particularly between elderly men. The altercation touches on a broader and already contentious issue: in recent years, there has been mounting public anger over private operators occupying prime stretches of Greek coastline with expensive, commercially rented sunloungers. Access to the sea carries deep cultural significance in Greece, and growing frustration over restricted or costly beach access has fuelled recurring social tensions.
The death also comes against the backdrop of a severe cost-of-living crisis that has placed considerable strain on households and social relations across the country, as it has across much of Europe. Authorities say the investigation into the precise sequence of events — including who struck whom and what directly caused the man's death — remains ongoing.
