Nigeria's Enugu State (a southeastern state known as a major commercial hub) has launched a health insurance scheme for market traders, with its Universal Health Coverage Agency signing a formal agreement with the National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria. Under the arrangement, traders will pay an annual premium of ₦12,000 (roughly $8) — collected through their union dues — to access a comprehensive healthcare package at any accredited facility of their choice. The initiative aims to reduce out-of-pocket medical costs for a historically underserved low-income group, with plans to eventually extend coverage to traders' family members.
