Nvidia is reportedly in advanced talks with OpenAI to provide $250 billion in financing guarantees for a massive AI data centre being built by SB Energy (a subsidiary of Japan's SoftBank) in Piketon, Ohio, on land leased from the US Department of Energy. The facility, which could ultimately cost over $500 billion including chips, is expected to deliver up to 800 megawatts of power by 2028 and would mark a major shift for OpenAI, which has until now relied on renting infrastructure from Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle. The deal has drawn scrutiny from analysts who warn it exemplifies circular financing — where AI companies use chip-makers' own money to buy their products — with critics drawing parallels to the debt-fuelled demand illusions that preceded the 2000 dot-com crash.
