Around a thousand demonstrators, organised by Jewish Voice for Peace (a progressive American Jewish advocacy group), marched through Manhattan to the United Nations on Thursday to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's appearance at the UN General Assembly, chanting accusations of genocide against the Israeli leader. Hundreds more staged a sit-in outside the UN building, which police dispersed after protesters blocked an intersection without a permit, resulting in more than 100 arrests — including that of actress Susan Sarandon, star of Thelma and Louise. The demonstration reflects deepening divisions in the United States over Washington's support for Israel, with many Jewish participants insisting that Netanyahu's policies in Gaza do not represent them.
