Nigeria says it is compiling details of citizens who fled South Africa during a wave of anti-migrant unrest, with Abuja planning to formally request compensation from Pretoria for properties and businesses left behind. South Africa's Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi confirmed that more than 50,000 foreign nationals have so far been processed for repatriation or deportation since xenophobic marches began in June, with most returns going to Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, and Uganda. However, a minister in South Africa's presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, flatly rejected any prospect of compensation, arguing that many Nigerian nationals had lived in informal settlements that are illegal under South African law.
