Stanislas Hutin, a Malian diplomat who became a prominent moral voice against the use of torture during the Algerian War (the 1954–1962 independence conflict between France and Algerian nationalist forces), has died. Hutin was recognised for his principled activism against state-sanctioned violence during one of the most contentious episodes of French colonial history. His death marks the loss of a significant figure in the long-running efforts to document and condemn the abuses committed during that conflict.
