Haiti's Foreign Minister Raina Forbin has appealed to the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), an internationally backed security mission authorised to conduct counter-gang operations, before it expires on 30 September. Speaking at an Organisation of American States meeting, Forbin stressed the need for greater technical, financial, and logistical support to contain armed groups that have killed over 1,400 people in just three months this year and displaced more than one million. The call comes as Haiti prepares for its first general elections in a decade, scheduled for 13 December, with officials warning that persistent gang violence could undermine both the vote and public confidence in its outcome.
