India and China have agreed to identify less contentious sections of their disputed 3,500-kilometre border for delimitation, following talks between Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. An eight-point joint statement issued on 26 August also announced two new military hotlines and additional meeting points for commander-level interactions along the Line of Actual Control (the de facto border between the two countries), aimed at preventing localised tensions from escalating. The talks, held under a boundary negotiation mechanism established in 2003, set the stage for expected meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit and the India-hosted BRICS summit in the coming weeks, as the two countries work to stabilise ties that hit a six-decade low following deadly clashes in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.
