A federal court in Buenos Aires mistakenly summoned the wrong witness during a hearing in the Cuadernos trial — one of Argentina's largest corruption cases — after confusing two men who share the same name, Juan Carlos Santos. The 73-year-old accountant who appeared at the Comodoro Py courthouse had no connection to the case and told the court, "You've got the wrong Juan Carlos Santos," having cut short a trip abroad with his daughter to comply with the summons, which was sent via WhatsApp. The Cuadernos trial, which began in November 2025, is trying former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and more than 80 co-defendants over allegations that an illicit network collected bribes from construction, energy and transport companies in exchange for state contracts between 2003 and 2015; the case takes its name from notebooks kept by a driver who allegedly recorded cash deliveries linked to the scheme.
