A team of 23 students at Eindhoven University of Technology (a leading technical university in the southern Netherlands) has built the Stella Juva, claimed to be the world's first ambulance powered entirely by solar energy, capable of running all onboard medical equipment from its rooftop panels. The vehicle has an estimated range of around 715 kilometres on a sunny day and carries equipment including a defibrillator and a portable X-ray machine, designed to bring healthcare directly to remote communities in areas where fuel and electricity shortages limit access to medical services. The team plans to conduct test drives in Kenya in August in partnership with health organisation Amref Health Africa, with the broader aim of inspiring industry rather than mass-producing the vehicle themselves.
