A magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western and central Colombia on 10 August has killed 329 people, injured 4,600 and left 247 missing, with over 314,000 people across 16 of the country's 32 departments affected, according to the National Disaster Risk Management Unit. The cities of Cali and Pereira bore the brunt of the disaster, with more than 31,000 homes destroyed, 553 buildings collapsed, and damage recorded at hundreds of health centres, schools, and roads. Colombia's geological service described the quake as the most powerful seismic event recorded in the country this century, and President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared an economic emergency and announced a reconstruction fund to address what authorities call the country's worst earthquake in decades.
