Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri secured second place at the Chess Candidates Tournament by defeating Germany's Matthias Blübaum in the final round. The overall winner was 20-year-old Uzbek Javokhir Sindarov (the Candidates Tournament is the elite event that determines who challenges the reigning world chess champion), who went undefeated throughout the competition and will now face reigning world champion Dommaraju Gukesh later this year. For Giri, 31, it was his best-ever finish in three Candidates appearances, earning him €45,000 in prize money and valuable FIDE ranking points toward qualifying for the next cycle.
