China exported 278,081 electric vehicles in April, a 40% year-on-year increase, bringing total overseas EV sales for 2025 to nearly 894,000 units, according to customs data compiled by Bloomberg. Asia was the largest regional buyer at over 110,000 vehicles, ahead of Europe and Latin America, while Brazil recorded the sharpest growth among individual markets, with imports jumping 221% to around 38,000 units. The surge comes despite a 100% US tariff on Chinese EVs and EU levies of up to 35.3%, underscoring China's dominance in markets outside the West — the country produces roughly 75% of the world's EVs and accounted for 55% of all EV sales outside Europe and the US last year, according to the International Energy Agency.
