A 23-year-old member of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force (the country's army, formally constrained by its pacifist constitution) who was arrested last month for allegedly intruding onto the grounds of the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo's Minato district has been placed under psychiatric observation. Prosecutors began the so-called "kантей-ryūchi" (forensic detention for mental competency assessment) on the 17th, a procedure used to determine whether a suspect can be held criminally responsible for their actions. The outcome of the evaluation is likely to play a decisive role in how the case proceeds.
