At least 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims, died early on Saturday when a truck attempting to overtake collided with a minivan carrying 14 pilgrims and a driver at Salama, in Makueni County, on the highway to the port city of Mombasa. Three people in the truck also died; the pilgrims were travelling to a prayer site in Nakuru County, and Mombasa's Catholic archbishop said he was deeply grieved. Kenya's transport safety authority said the stretch is a known accident "black spot" where safety recommendations had already been made, and urged drivers to avoid dangerous overtaking, while President William Ruto offered condolences.
