Hayden Panettiere, the American actress best known for her roles in the cult sci-fi series Heroes and the musical drama Nashville, has died at the age of 36. Her father, Alan "Skip" Panettiere, confirmed the news in a statement shared with media outlets on Sunday. "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," he said. "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen." The cause of death was not disclosed, though entertainment news site TMZ reported that police were investigating the circumstances of her passing.
Panettiere's career spanned three decades, beginning when she was just four years old, cast on the US daytime soap opera One Life to Live. She voiced Dot, the young ant princess, in Pixar's 1998 animated film A Bug's Life — a performance that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for Children — and appeared alongside Denzel Washington in the 2000 football drama Remember the Titans. She rose to international fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet, a teenager who discovers she cannot be harmed, in NBC's serialised hit Heroes, which ran from 2006 to 2010. Her later role as aspiring country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville earned her two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress. She was also part of the Scream satirical horror franchise, and her most recent screen appearance was in the psychological thriller Sleepwalker, released in January 2026.
Offscreen, Panettiere was open about the personal struggles that accompanied her early fame. Earlier this year she published a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she wrote candidly about growing up as a child actor, her experiences with addiction and postpartum depression, and her path to recovery. In 2015 she had publicly disclosed entering a treatment facility following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, with former partner Wladimir Klitschko, the Ukrainian professional boxer. She is survived by Kaya. Panettiere's younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28 from complications related to a heart condition.
The news of Panettiere's death drew an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues around the world. Her father asked for privacy "as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss." Her passing comes at a moment when she had appeared to be entering a new chapter — speaking publicly about her recovery and releasing her memoir just months earlier. She was 36 years old.
